Kirshner Driving
School has been in operation since 1947. Our goal is to place confident,
safe drivers on the road who have a clear understanding of defensive
driving. We are licensed by the State of Washington to conduct a teenage
driving program, for students 15 to 18 years old.
Successful completion
of the Kirshner Teenage Driving Education program will give your teen
a Traffic Safety Education Certificate. This certificate allows testing
with the Washington State DOL to qualify for a Washington driver's license.
Your teen must
be 15 to 18 years old to qualify for our teenage program, and must be
16 years old to qualify for a state driver's license. The State of Washington
Department of Licensing and the Washington State Superintendent of Public
Schools has formulated guidelines for our course. Our teenage course
is five weeks in length. The classroom and behind-the-wheel portions
should run concurrently.
Our course consists
of 30 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 4 1/2 hours of
in-car instruction. Additional lessons are optional for stick shift or
specialized training.
Students are encouraged
to attend all of our 2 hour class sessions, but may miss 3 as long as
the work is made up as per the classroom instructor's requirements.
The classes meet late afternoons and/or early evenings for 2 hours 3
times per week for 5 weeks. Daytime classes during the week are also
offered during the summer. The classroom portion must be passed with
a score of 75% or better.
Drive times, in
addition to class sessions, are scheduled as much as possible at the
student's convenience. The behind-the-wheel portion includes 6 or 8
private driving lessons and must be passed with a score of 80%. Students
who do not show up for lessons, arrive over 15 minutes late, or fail
to bring their permit are charged $25.00 to reschedule a driving lesson.
All driving lessons must be completed within 90 days of the course starting
date. In most cases the driving lessons will finish after the classroom
portion is finished if available drive times are limited.
Each driving lesson
is structured to teach new skills, such as parallel parking, backing
a vehicle and lane changing. Constant drilling on defensive techniques
is emphasized to all students.
Our instructional
vehicles are late models and are equipped with dual brakes, air bags
and special mirrors. Manual or automatic transmission instruction is
available.
Our classroom and
driving instructors are certified by the DOL and Superintendent of Public
Schools. They bring experience, encouragement and enthusiasm to the
job of teaching your teen the mechanics of driving. The defensive driving
techniques that will keep him or her safe on the road are continually
emphasized.
Count on Kirshner
to teach your teen safe, defensive driving.
